Tecoma × 'Red Hot' on low water in July 2022.

Summary

South Coast Research & Extension Center (South Coast REC/SCREC) is located in Irvine California, this site has a sandy loam soil and plants are irrigated with reclaimed water. More information about the field sites is located in the Nuts & Bolts section.

Red Hot is medium sized evergreen shrub originating from the breeding program at Civano Growers in Arizona. Red Hot produces clusters of fiery red trumpet shaped flowers, with the inside “throat” colored orange-yellow. Red Hot was planted at UC Davis and South Coast REC (SCREC) with site specific performance details and recommendations below.

UC Davis Trial – Davis, CA

Unfortunately, after a summer of promising growth during the establishment season in 2021, none of the Red Hot survived the winter for evaluation in 2022. There were several leftover pots growing under the shade cloth that did make it through the winter, which suggests this cultivar prefers a more sheltered location/frost protection, and/or a more free-draining soil in our climate.

South Coast REC – Irvine, CA

Red Hot performed well in Irvine, exhibiting high foliage quality, uniform shape, and a long blooming season. All plants maintained at least one flower per plant during each each month of data collection. There were several bloom peaks: May, July/August, and October. Plants were self-cleaning and dropped spent flowers quickly. The flowers were very popular with wildlife, attracting ants, bees, and hummingbirds. The plants had a uniform growth habit resulting in an even, round shape. Red Hot maintained a consistently high level of performance over the growing season. While perhaps overshadowed at the June events, Red Hot was one of the highest rated plants and the participants’ favorite plant in the sun field in September. Due these traits, Red Hot scored well across multiple ratings categories to earn a Blue Ribbon™. Based on the data collected we recommend irrigating Red Hot on Low water in WUCOLS Region 3.
