Background
Throughout the year researchers open the trial fields to professionals of the landscape and nursery realms as well as those from academia, public agencies, horticultural societies, and master gardener programs. At the open houses participants rate the aesthetics of selected plant material. Through the open houses we hope to expose participants to new plant material that they may grow, specify, or recommend. Likewise we seek to gain a greater understanding in how participants view the aesthetics in order to contextualize our monthly ratings and irrigation recommendations.
Who can participate?
These events are open to nursery and landscape practitioners, and professionals from related fields, e.g. public agencies, researchers, etc. UCCE Master Gardeners are welcome to attend as they are a key horticultural resource in California. Due to limited space and personnel at the sites, the event is not open to the general public at this time.
What's involved?
Participants will assess foliage quality, floral quantity, and overall appearance of selected plants. The ratings take roughly 60-90 minutes to complete. Staff will provide a rubric, ratings sheet, clipboard, and a brief orientation on using the rubric and an overview of the trial. We also enjoy discussing with attendees the methods we use and the principles involved in landscape irrigation.
Important Details:
Participants should wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, as the field paths are packed soil and chipped bark mulch. You may also want to pack and use sunscreen and wear a hat, as most of the plants are in full sun. Participation is voluntary. Carpooling is encouraged, but not required. Cold water and a shade structure for resting are provided.
