Summary

South Coast Research & Extension Center (South Coast REC/SCREC) is located in Irvine California, this site has a sandy loam soil and plants are irrigated with reclaimed water. UC Davis is located in Davis, California, this site has a silty clay loam soil and plants are irrigated with potable water. More information about the field sites is located in the Nuts & Bolts section.

Sitting Pretty is a grandiflora rose with medium green foliage and slightly coppery-colored new growth. The light pink, semi-double flowers have an open face and are lightly scented. Sitting Pretty was evaluated at UC Davis and South Coast REC (SCREC) with site specific performance details and recommendations below.

UC Davis Trial – Davis, CA

After light pruning in January 2022, Sitting Pretty maintained a round, uniform shape throughout the deficit season. Overall, Sitting Pretty performed well in the trial, with roughly 80% or more of the plants having at least one flower during each data collection event. Early in the season pest and disease issues lowered the foliage quality, in turn lowering the overall appearance, with the June ratings being the nadir for Sitting Pretty. All plants bounced back with noticeably higher July ratings in all categories other than floral display. Sitting Pretty maintained high aesthetic value during a hot August and September, finishing the season strong with its highest overall appearance ratings occurring in October. Thus, while the early season performance was less than ideal, the data indicates Sitting Pretty could be a good performer during the hot summers in the Central Valley. Considering there were no statistical differences between the treatments, we recommend irrigating Sitting Pretty according to the WUCOLS Low Category of Water Needs in Region 2.

South Coast REC – Irvine, CA

Sitting Pretty started the trial in a strong position in April – the plants had high foliage scores, lots of buds and a few flowers. By May the first flush of blooms was showing, though foliage quality started to decline, with powdery mildew and black spot observed. After the large bloom in May the calyces turned brown and lowered overall appearance ratings. The plants did continue to push new growth and produce flowers. In August another flush of bloom started, though a tendency to hold on to spent blooms negatively affected ratings. Thrips were present throughout the duration of the trial and caused damage to all plants over the growing season. We recommend irrigating Sitting Pretty according to the WUCOLS Low Category of Water Needs in Region 3.
