Summary

South Coast Research & Extension Center (South Coast REC/SCREC) is located in Irvine California, this site has a sandy loam soil and plants are irrigated with reclaimed water. UC Davis is located in Davis, California, this site has a silty clay loam soil and plants are irrigated with potable water. More information about the field sites is located in the Nuts & Bolts section.

Petite Knock Out is the first miniature rose evaluated in the irrigation trials. A small, compact form was observed at both sites. The fire-engine red flowers on Petite Knock Out are 1.5” wide. Petite Knock Out was self-cleaning, but petals turned a light brown color and sometimes remained on the plant longer than desired before shattering from the plant. The brown calyces remained, and due to the slow-growing nature of the compact plant, it took some time to fully obscure them with new foliage, which periodically detracted from the overall appearance. Petite Knock Out was evaluated at UC Davis and South Coast REC (SCREC) with site specific performance details and recommendations below.

UC Davis Trial – Davis, CA

Flowering started with several plants in May and all plants were blooming at the next data collection in June. All plants had some flowers during the remaining months of the trial. At our site the flowers had a vase-like shape rather than being fully open to reveal the center of the flowers. This meant they were not an attraction for pollinators. For aesthetic purposes some pruning was done in late winter after the establishment year to remove the previous years’ remaining spent flowers, but overall, plants retained their compact, dense round form developed in the first year. Petite Knock Out scored well in plant health and overall appearance and we did not find any significant differences between the treatments. We recommend irrigating this plant on Low in WUCOLS Region 2.

South Coast REC – Irvine, CA

At the start of the trial some aphids and leaf tip burn were observed on Petite Knock Out. As the plant leafed out, some shoots proved to be more rapid growers than others resulting in a slightly non-uniform appearance. The plants reached full bloom in May. The persistence of the spent flowers provided a site for aphids. As the growing season progressed, an increasing amount of tip-burn and defoliation were observed. The presence of spent blooms and foliage issues compromised aesthetic performance. The Open House results bear this out; the mean Overall Appearance ratings for June ranged from 3.6 to 3.8, yet by October this dropped to between 2.3 and 2.5. While the mean overall appearance values averaged above 3 for the season, a noticeable downward shift in performance occurred from June to September. We recommend irrigating Urban Legend on Low water in WUCOLS Region 3.
