Summary
Urban Legend is a shrub rose with deep green foliage and red, semi-double blooms bearing bright yellow stamens that are easily accessible and attractive to pollinators. Urban Legend is a shade of red that can be challenging to photograph. In person this is a bright red, which can appear orange-red at mid-day and a softer coral-red in the twilight hours. While Urban Legend is relatively compact, at both sites we observed a tendency for the rose to produce the occasional disproportionally tall cane that resulted in a slightly non-uniform appearance (see photos for example). This could be addressed easily with light, selective pruning – something not possible during the trials since it would interfere with growth data collection. Urban Legend was evaluated at UC Davis and South Coast REC (SCREC) with site specific performance details and recommendations below.
UC Davis Trial – Davis, CA
Urban Legend was a vigorous grower that maintained some level of bloom throughout the deficit period. Flowering started in May and continued to be observed until data collection ended in October. Peak bloom was observed in June, with a second peak occurring in August, though plants also produced strong flowering scores in July, September, and October. Participants rated Urban Legend highly at the June and October Open Houses. Data analysis revealed that the mean ratings of Overall Appearance are greater than 4 for all treatments. Hence, we are awarding a Blue Ribbon™ to Oso Easy Urban Legend. While the 80% treatment scored significantly higher in overall appearance than the 20%, the performance on Low water was nevertheless very good resulting in our recommendation for irrigating Urban Legend on Low water in region 2.
South Coast REC – Irvine, CA
Early in the season some minor chlorosis was observed, though this quickly disappeared. Peak bloom was observed in May, with regular, lighter re-bloom occurring throughout the rest of the deficit period. While this rose is considered self-cleaning, meaning petals will shatter and fall from the plant without needing deadheading, trials staff felt the brown petals were held on a bit too long. As the season progressed, more and more long canes were produced resulting in asymmetric plants, that were 6-7’ wide. These two traits impacted overall appearance scores, though there was no difference in performance between treatments. We recommend irrigating Urban Legend on Low water in WUCOLS Region 3.
